Background of the Study:
In today’s knowledge economy, research collaboration is crucial for innovation and academic advancement. Kaduna Polytechnic, Kaduna State, has recognized the potential of big data analytics to enhance research collaboration by integrating disparate research outputs, funding data, and collaborative networks into a cohesive analytical framework. Big data techniques allow for the collection, integration, and analysis of vast volumes of scholarly data, thereby revealing trends, identifying potential research partners, and uncovering previously unseen patterns of interdisciplinary collaboration (Chukwu, 2023). With the proliferation of digital research outputs and the increasing availability of online databases, Kaduna Polytechnic can now leverage advanced analytics to break down silos that have traditionally hindered collaborative efforts. By systematically analyzing publication records, citation metrics, and co-authorship networks, big data analytics can provide actionable insights that facilitate strategic partnerships, optimize resource allocation, and support evidence-based policy making in research management (Ibrahim, 2024).
Furthermore, big data analytics contributes to the democratization of research by identifying emerging areas of study and ensuring that researchers from diverse backgrounds and disciplines are connected. This approach is especially valuable in resource-limited settings, where traditional research collaboration models may be constrained by limited access to funding and infrastructure. The application of big data analytics in Kaduna Polytechnic not only accelerates the pace of discovery but also enhances the institution’s visibility on the global research stage. However, the integration of big data in research collaboration is not without challenges. Issues such as data interoperability, quality control, and the ethical use of data pose significant barriers to the effective implementation of these technologies (Olawale, 2025). Moreover, there is a need for capacity building among researchers to interpret and utilize complex analytical outputs effectively. This study thus seeks to evaluate the impact of big data analytics on research collaboration at Kaduna Polytechnic, providing insights into both the benefits and challenges of its implementation, and proposing strategies to maximize its potential for fostering innovation and academic excellence (Chukwu, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024; Olawale, 2025).
Statement of the Problem:
Despite the promise of big data analytics to revolutionize research collaboration, Kaduna Polytechnic faces several challenges in its practical application. A significant problem is the lack of integrated data systems across various research departments, which results in fragmented datasets that are difficult to analyze cohesively (Chukwu, 2023). The absence of standardized protocols for data collection and sharing further complicates efforts to generate meaningful insights from big data. Additionally, many researchers at the institution lack the requisite skills in data analytics, limiting their ability to fully leverage these tools for collaborative research (Ibrahim, 2024).
Furthermore, technical challenges such as inadequate computational infrastructure and limited access to advanced analytical software hinder the effective processing of large datasets. Concerns over data privacy and the ethical use of sensitive research data also contribute to the reluctance of some stakeholders to adopt big data methodologies. These issues are compounded by organizational inertia, as traditional research practices and departmental silos resist change. The result is a suboptimal research environment where potential collaborative synergies remain untapped, thereby limiting the institution’s overall research output and impact (Olawale, 2025). This study seeks to address these challenges by systematically investigating the barriers to effective big data integration in research collaboration, with the aim of proposing a comprehensive framework to enhance collaborative efforts at Kaduna Polytechnic.
